Armenian chess Woman Grand Master, five-time national champion, and internationally experienced chess educator and administrator with over a decade of activity at European and global level. Currently serving as Head Coach of Abu Dhabi's girls and women's chess programme, Maria Gevorgyan brings a rare combination of elite competitive achievement, federation governance experience, academic expertise in sports and education, and cross-cultural institutional credibility to the ECU New Team.

Formed through European youth championships and national team competition, and now operating as a professional chess leader across Europe, Armenia, and the UAE, she brings direct participant insight into ECU's core events alongside the professional perspective of a practising administrator and researcher.

Responsible for the design and delivery of Abu Dhabi's girls and women's chess programme, encompassing player development, squad management, performance reporting, and coordination with national and regional chess associations. Operating within a multi-national institutional environment across Europe, the Middle East, and the broader chess world.

Armenian Chess Federation — Secretary General (2022)

Served as Secretary General of the Armenian Chess Federation, managing institutional correspondence with FIDE and ECU structures, coordinating federation governance processes, and leading the successful organization of the 2022 General Assembly.

Vision & Priorities as ECU Vice President

As Vice President, Maria Gevorgyan will focus on four strategic priorities drawn directly from her experience as a player, coach, administrator, and researcher:

  • Olympiad-Inspired European Team Championship — a team format philosophy analogous to the Chess Olympiad, fostering national identity and broader federation engagement.
  • Development Programme Accessibility — a structured ECU framework ensuring players at all levels, not only elite competitors, have meaningful access to European chess.
  • Youth & Women's Chess — targeted support for women's and junior chess infrastructure across ECU member federations.
  • Education-Sport Integration — positioning chess as a recognised educational tool in European school curricula.

Chess gave me an enormous amount throughout my life. I intend to serve the European Chess Union with the same seriousness and commitment that competitive chess demands.
